About the Name, WuJiu/59

五九 (pronounced: wu jiu)- five-nine

There’s a folk saying in traditional Chinese Almanacs “五九六九沿河看柳” — the fifth nine-day after winter solstice marks the stretch of time when winter begins to soften and warmth slowly returns. It is not yet spring, but it is no longer the deepest cold. And if you walk along the river at this time, you may see willows sprouting green.

The name is also meant to reflect the feeling of a threshold between what has been and what is still becoming. Like the last second before a new minute.

Five also represents adaptability, change, and balance of mind, body, emotions, environment, and spirit, the five areas we consider in therapy. And nine represents longevity and resilience in these areas.

Together, “五九 wu jiu” reflects the kind of space our work starts from, and the kind of transformation I believe therapy can offer: it starts in the moment something inside us starts to shift, when we begin to imagine warmth returning, even faintly. Therapy is a gradual return to connection, movement, and possibility. It is also a reminder that, like the season turning, change may begin long before it is fully visible, like light returning a little earlier each day after winter solstice.

Who am I? What do I offer?
